Buying Commercial Gym Equipment in Egypt: A Buyer's Guide for Gym Owners

Opening a new gym in Egypt — or upgrading an existing one — requires capital decisions that will define your member experience for the next 5-10 years. Equipment is your biggest single expense, your operational backbone, and your differentiator. This guide covers what gym owners need to know before signing a six-figure equipment order.

Step 1: Define Your Gym Segment

Before brand or budget, figure out who you're serving:

  • Boutique studio (50-100 sqm): Focused on a few group classes, light equipment mix. Member willingness-to-pay is moderate.
  • Mid-market full-service (200-500 sqm): Cardio + selectorized + free weights + accessories. The most common Egyptian gym format.
  • Premium / hotel / corporate (500+ sqm): Full lineup including premium brands, attention to aesthetic, longer warranty and service contracts.
  • Powerlifting / functional fitness: Squat racks, platforms, plate-loaded machines, accessories.

Your segment determines brand mix more than your budget does.

Step 2: Commercial Brand Comparison

Hammer Strength (Plate-Loaded Strength)

The American commercial standard for plate-loaded machines (Lat Pulldown, Chest Press, Hip Thrust, Low Row, V Squat, etc.). Built to last 10+ years in heavy commercial use. Every serious gym in the US has Hammer Strength — it's that ubiquitous. We stock the full line in Egypt.

Life Fitness (Selectorized Strength + Cardio)

Life Fitness Pro 2 series covers selectorized strength (Chest Press, Shoulder Press, Lat Pulldown, Pulley Low Row, Abductor/Adductor, etc.). Cleaner aesthetic than Hammer Strength, less intimidating to general members. Common in commercial gyms worldwide.

Technogym (Premium Italian)

The luxury commercial standard. Technogym Selection line for strength, Excite for cardio. Beautiful design, premium feel, app-connected. Best fit for hotel gyms, executive corporate wellness, premium boutique studios. Significantly more expensive than other commercial brands but lasts forever.

Precor (Reliable Commercial Workhorse)

American brand. Precor Icarian line covers strength machines (Smith machine, Hack Squat Slide, Angled Leg Press, etc.) and Precor cardio is widely used in hotel gyms. Strong build quality, slightly more affordable than Technogym, less premium aesthetic.

Leopard + BH Fitness (Mid-Tier Cardio)

For cardio, commercial Leopard (6080, 6090, Excite Run) and BH Fitness handle the price-conscious mid-market. Used in many Egyptian gyms where Technogym pricing isn't justified.

Step 3: Budget Allocation by Gym Size

Boutique studio (100 sqm)

Typical equipment budget: EGP 300K-600K

  • 2-4 cardio machines (treadmills + bikes + rower) — EGP 150K-200K
  • 4-6 strength machines (Life Fitness or Hammer Strength) — EGP 120K-250K
  • Full dumbbell rack + bench + accessories — EGP 80K-150K

Mid-market full-service (300 sqm)

Typical equipment budget: EGP 1.5M-3M

  • 8-15 cardio machines (mix of treadmills, bikes, ellipticals, rowers) — EGP 500K-900K
  • 10-20 strength machines — EGP 600K-1.5M
  • Free weights (full dumbbell rack 2.5-50 kg, Olympic plates, barbells) — EGP 250K-400K
  • Benches, racks, accessories — EGP 150K-200K

Premium / hotel gym (500 sqm)

Typical equipment budget: EGP 4M-8M+

  • Premium cardio mix (Technogym Excite, Life Fitness) — EGP 1.5M-2.5M
  • Technogym Selection + Hammer Strength strength line — EGP 2M-4M
  • Full free weights + functional zone + accessories — EGP 500K+

Step 4: Installation and Warranty Considerations

Commercial equipment installation is not optional. Each machine needs to be unboxed, assembled, calibrated, and tested. For a 300-sqm gym, expect 3-5 days of installation work.

Questions to ask your supplier:

  • Is installation included or quoted separately?
  • Who handles ongoing maintenance and breakdowns?
  • What's the warranty per category (frame vs electronics vs upholstery)?
  • What's the typical lead time for spare parts in Egypt?
  • Do you have a service contract option?

Step 5: Maintenance and Spare Parts

Commercial equipment in heavy use needs maintenance every 3-6 months. The most common breakdowns: cable replacements on selectorized machines, treadmill belt and motor service, upholstery wear on benches. Always plan a budget for ongoing maintenance — typically 3-5% of equipment value annually.

Buying from a supplier with local spare parts inventory matters more than the absolute lowest sticker price. A treadmill that's out of service for 6 weeks waiting on a part loses you more in member churn than the parts cost.

Common Mistakes Gym Owners Make

  1. Spending too much on premium cardio, too little on strength. Most members come for the weights. Allocate accordingly.
  2. Buying too many machines, not enough free weights. A heavy dumbbell rack (up to 50 kg) is used constantly. A 20th strength machine sits empty most of the day.
  3. Ignoring layout planning until after delivery. Equipment placement affects flow, safety, and member experience. Plan with your supplier before ordering.
  4. Skipping the showroom visit. You're spending hundreds of thousands of pounds. Test the equipment yourself before signing.
  5. Underestimating delivery and installation timeline. Plan 2-4 weeks of lead time on commercial orders, plus installation days.
