Most hotel and compound gyms in Egypt are underbuilt. A few treadmills, a sad multi-station home gym, a rack of mismatched dumbbells — it satisfies a building code requirement but doesn't attract guests, justify membership fees, or feel like a real gym. Done properly, a 100-200 sqm fitness facility is one of the highest-return amenities a hotel or compound can offer: drives bookings, justifies higher rates, retains corporate tenants.
This guide walks through what equipping a proper hotel or compound gym actually requires in Egypt — by space size, equipment category, brand mix, and total cost.
Define Your Facility Type
Different facility types need different equipment mixes:
- Boutique hotel (under 100 rooms): 50-80 sqm, basic cardio + light strength. Goal: meet expectations, not stand out.
- 4-5 star hotel (100-300 rooms): 100-200 sqm, full cardio + selectorized strength + free weights. Goal: amenity that contributes to bookings.
- Resort or 5-star with health focus: 200-500 sqm, premium brands, possible spa integration. Goal: destination feature.
- Compound / gated community: 100-300 sqm, family-friendly mix, durable equipment for heavy daily use. Goal: tenant retention.
- Corporate wellness center: 80-200 sqm, accessibility-focused, easy-to-use equipment. Goal: employee engagement.

- Plate-loaded option: Hammer Strength (preferred by serious lifters, but less intuitive for casual guests)
Free Weights (15-20% of budget)
The most-used zone in a hotel gym. Don't undersize it.
- Full dumbbell range (2.5-50 kg in 2.5 kg increments) with rack
- 1-2 adjustable benches
- 1 Olympic bar + plates (in fitness-focused facilities)
- 1 squat rack (optional but valued by serious guests)
Brand recommendations:
- Hammer Strength CPU dumbbells for a complete set
- Adjustable Bench Pro 2 or Precor commercial benches
- Technogym Squat Rack for fitness-focused facilities
- Technogym Dumbbell Rack (12 pairs) for organized storage

What Hotels and Compounds Get Wrong
- Over-investing in cardio, under-investing in strength. Cardio machines are visible but strength gets more daily use per machine. Allocate 25-35% to selectorized strength.
- Skipping the dumbbell range. A dumbbell set that only goes to 15 kg makes serious lifters take their workout elsewhere. Go to at least 30 kg.
- Choosing brand by name recognition alone. Technogym is exceptional but expensive. Life Fitness, Precor, and Hammer Strength are equally durable at a lower price point. Mix-and-match per category is fine.
- No maintenance plan. Hotel equipment is in heavy daily use. Plan a service contract (typically 3-5% of equipment value annually) or accept breakdowns.
- Bad layout. Cardio facing a wall is boring — face mirrors or windows. Selectorized in rows with 80 cm walkways between. Free-weight zone separate from cardio to avoid traffic conflicts.
